On Longing

"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale."

I chose this image because while I was in New York City I visited the public library. Standing on the steps right in front of the pillars near the entrance made me feel small in comparison. There was so much history in this one building and the pillars helped give the feeling of something greater and bigger.

"Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience."

This photo was chosen because it is an old delta crop duster airplane on display at a museum. Even though it is only an antique now and meant only to be viewed, it is still a representation of what it use to be while it was up in the air. The plane is the trace of authentic experience because it was real and flown in times past.

"The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the 3 Dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body."

I chose this image because it is a monument, open to the public, and a 3D statue. It embodies animals, specifically dogs, and immortalizes them in a piece of art which will stand against time. The statue will stand for all to see and admire and will act as a souvenir for passing people.

"Nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss."

As the quote says "Nostalgia cannot be sustained without loss" and this image I feel represent this quote. The image is of a cemetery where loss is sowed all the time but when standing there in the cemetery I could feel the nostalgia of times gone by and of how I was standing in the midst of so much history. There was loss present will lives lost but it also gave way to memories of the past.

"To have a souvenir of the exotic is to posses both a specimen and a trophy."

The statues of religion such as the one in this image are full of history and exotic stories. This statue is a remembrance of a time gone past and while is proves as a type of trophy for the people who follow the religion it is also something they look up to, a type of specimen for those who see the deity as someone to look up too.
